Thank you for your interest or for registering to volunteer for Champions baseball. We’re excited to be starting our 8th season with such a great group of volunteers.
For those that are new, Champions is a co-ed special needs baseball program that takes place at Stagecoach Park. This year, the games are scheduled to begin March 21 and run until May 16. There are three games. The games usually run about an hour or 2 innings of batting around the lineup. The first game starts at 3:00 pm, the second at 4:00 pm, and the last at 5:00 pm.
The most rewarding experience for volunteers and the players is to be a dedicated buddy, this would mean going to nearly every game and really getting to know your player. Especially for kids with special needs, consistency is paramount. Our dedicated volunteers who are able to make that time commitment tell us about how much they enjoy the experience. Some of our volunteers have been paired with the same player for over 5 years.
However, not everyone is able to make that kind of time commitment. For those people there are floater buddies. These volunteers go to the games they can make and will paired with players who don’t have a buddy that day.
In order to participate, volunteers are required to attend one of the classroom orientations as well as the field orientation. The classroom orientations are on Jan 23 from 7-8 pm, Feb 4 from 7-8 pm, Feb 20 from 7-8 pm and Feb 23 from 3-4 pm in the Stagecoach Park Classroom. The field orientation will be on March 14 from 3-5 at the Field 2 at Stagecoach Park. These will help inform you on how the game works and how to interact with special needs kids.
Thanks again for signing up for the program. Let’s make 2020 the best year of Champions baseball yet.

Concussion in Sports
The NFHS has teamed up with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to educate coaches, officials, parents and students on the importance of proper concussion recognition and management in high school sports. This course highlights the impact of sports-related concussion on athletes, teaches how to recognize a suspected concussion, and provides protocols to manage a suspected concussion with steps to help players return to play safely after a concussion. Each state's requirements for concussion management are included as part of the course.
